Zambia confirms the death of President Michael Sata

The Zambian government has confirmed that President Michael Sata has died after an illness.
Roland Msiska, secretary to the Zambian Cabinet, said in a statement Wednesday that Sata died late Tuesday in London, where he was being treated for an undisclosed illness.
Msiska says Sata's wife, Christine Kaseba, and other family members were with the 77-year-old president when he died.
Private Muzi television station and the Zambia Reports and Zambian Watchdog websites said the southern African nation's cabinet was about to meet.
Michael Chilufya Sata was born in 1937 in Mpika, in the Northern Province of Zambia.
He came to power in September 2011 and became Zambia’s fifth President after the country gained independence in 1964.
Before independence he was a police officer, railway man and trade unionist.
Under the leadership of Zambia’s first Republican President Kenneth Kaunda, Sata became the governor of the capital city, Lusaka.
During the campaign for the return to multi-party elections in 1991, he left the ruling Party UNIP to join the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy MMD under the leadership of Frederick Chiluba.
When the MMD won the 1991 elections, he served in the ministries of local government, labour and health.
He was later appointed minister without portfolio.
In 2001, Sata left the MMD when the then President Chiluba opted to appoint Levy Mwanawasa as the Party’s flag-bearer as opposed to himself.
He then formed the Patriotic Front, which contested and lost elections in 2001, 2006 and in 2008.
Sata then ran for the Presidency for a fourth time in September 2011 and won forty three percent of the vote.

Zimbabwe student challenge Grace Mugabe's Phd

A Zimbabwe student union Zinasu was due to take Grace Mugabe to court on Wednesday.
This involves a PhD which the first lady was awarded by the University of Zimbabwe.
Critics are asking why Grace Mugabe's thesis does not appear online.
The country's vice president Joice Mujuru  graduated with a PhD at the same time.
Her thesis already appears on the University of Zimbabwe website.
To explain this the state-owned Herald quoted an unnamed senior academic at UZ.
It's claimed that publishing a PhD dissertation can take to up to a year and that of the 12 PhD students only the vice president’s thesis had been uploaded.
Student union Zinasu denies it’s targeting the first lady.
But that it's protecting the credibility of the country’s education system.
This follows reports that President Robert Mugabe's wife got her degree just two months after she registered for the course.

Woman Hides On Roof As Intruder Looks For Her

A quiet morning in bed escalated into a terrifying ordeal for one young woman when a burglar broke into her house, forcing her to hide on her roof.
Melora Rivera’s entire horrific escapade was captured on camera by bystander Alexandria Thompson, who was snapping photos on a cellphone while Rivera huddled under the eaves of a bank of windows, barely blocked from the view of the home intruder just feet away from her. Rivera, who was laying in bed when the break in began, grabbed her phone while on the run to the roof. She called 911 and spoke to the dispatcher while crouched below the eaves.
“He managed to break one of these panels and reach in to unlock the door,” Rivera told CBS LA. “Once I saw him in the house, I knew that we both couldn’t be there. I knew that I didn’t want to have a confrontation with him of any sort, you know, not knowing what his intention was.”
The would-be burglar was identified as Christian Hicks, 29, a well-known homeless person from the area. As it happens, a neighbor of Rivera’s had called police at 7:30 that same morning to report Hicks meandering through a yard.
“I saw this guy this morning in handcuffs,” Thompson reported to CBS LA. “I’ve seen him in my yard. I called the police.”
