Horrific child abuse: baby Arnella is doing fine
In Kampala, Uganda an 18-month toddler who was brutally tortured by her helper has received medical attention and is doing well.
The nanny Jolly Tumuhirwe was caught on camera slapping the
child,Arnella Kamanzi and throwing her to the floor and using a blunt
object to forcefully beat her while she continuously stepped on the
toddler’s body.
Despite the ordeal, her mother says little Arnella is recovering at home quite well.
According to Africanspotlight.com, the toddler’s father, Erick Kamanzi
noticed bruises on his daughter’s body. He then reviewed the security
tapes as he had installed cameras in his home and saw the footage of
Tumuhirwe assaulting the child.

Uganda police amend charges against abusive nanny
Reports from Ugandan say that a charge of torture against an abusive nanny has been amended to attempted murder.
A security camera planted in the house shows the woman, Jolly
Tumuhirwe (22), slapping, kicking and hitting the baby and thereafter
stomping on the two-year old's spine.
Many Ugandans who have watched the video say they have been traumatised.
Shaabab suspects ambush bus near Mandera, kill 28.
28 people have reportedly been killed Saturday morning near Kenyan
border town of Mandera after gunmen believed to be Somalia’s Shabaab
fighters attacked a bus heading to Nairobi, according to the police.
The bus was reportedly ambushed around 5am near Arabia village and driven to Mandera, near Somalia border.
7 of the victims are said to be women.
Nanny caught on camera abusing a child in Uganda
The two-year-old Aneela is seen terribly tortured by Jolly Tumuhiirwe, 22.
The video captured by interior security camera early last week at
Erick Kamanzi,’s home, reveals a breath-taking story where Tumuhiirwe is
trying to feed the baby.
The nanny identified as Jolly Tumuhiirwe, 22, is now reportedly
confined to a wheelchair and feeding through tubes due to the severe
beating she received from the baby’s father.
According to family sources, Kamanzi last week came home and found
some bruises on the baby. He did not ask what happened but he hastily
went to review the cameras which, he had taken long to monitor. This was
last Saturday November 15th 2014.
What he saw is what is seen in the video below. Raged to the marrow,
Kamanzi bounced on Tumuhiirwe and clobbered her to pulp. Done with it,
he turned to tend to the baby as Tumuhiirwe ran to police where, she
reported an assault case against her Master Kamanzi.
The Kiwatule police swung into action, raided Kamanzi’s home and
arrested him. He promptly confessed to the charge before he was dragged
to cells. After cooling down, Kamanzi asked the cops to look at what
made him clobber the maid. A mere look at the video changed the cops’
stance and released Kamanzi.
Speaking to the investigator today, police chief spokesman CP Fred
Enanga confirmed that Tumuhiirwe’s case had been taken over by the
events.
Reading the file number as CRB 1346/14 of Kiira Road, Enanga said the
nanny was yesterday charged under Anti-torture Act at Nakawa Court.
But Enanga hastily adds that police are contemplating on revising the
charge and upgrade it to attempted murder. He said the Tumuhiirwe will
re-appear in court on December 8th 2014. Efforts to get hints on the
baby’s mother were futile as family sources maintained silence on the
question.
(NB: I beg you to just look for that video because i tried to send it in vain, most of you are going to cry. )

Tanzania: Sitti Surrenders Miss Tanzania 2014 Crown
THIS year's Miss Redd's Tanzania declared winner, Sitti Mtemvu, has
finally thrown in the towel and surrendered the title she was crowned on
October 11, 2014 following a spirited saga about her age claims.
From day one of her reign the social media went viral, accusing her of having lied about her age.
Those who claimed to know her said her true age disqualified her from
taking part in the pageant, whose minimum and maximum ages are 18 and
24, respectively.
Nor did Miss Mtemvu's statements help matters. On the day the pageant
was held she said when introducing herself on stage that she was 18
years old. Since the event was being televised live, there is no
question of people of ill will putting words in her mouth.
In fact, it is this claim of hers which kicked off her age debate. As
the debate raged it came to light that the birth certificate she
submitted to the pageant organisers to prove her qualification to take
part in the contest was in fact issued by the Registration, Insolvency
and Trusteeship Agency (RITA) on Sept 9, this year, just a few weeks
before the contest was to be held, which showed that she was born on May
31, 1991.
When confronted by the media, Miss Mtemvu retorted that, being a
frequent traveller, she had lost the original birth certificate.
However, she circumspectly said she could not remember whether she
reported the loss to any police station! And then irrefutable evidence
started emerging.
The Immigration Department said without mincing words that Miss
Mtemvu's photocopy of her birth certificate which she used to secure a
Tanzanian passport showed that she was born on May 31, 1989 (which
brings her age to 25 this year). And this is the year of birth which
appears on her current passport.
Her driving licence issued in the US state of Texas also shows that
she was born on May 31, 1989. It should be borne in mind that both the
passport and the driving licence were issued on the strength of
supporting documents supplied by the applicant herself - and both are
consistent about her birth date: May 31, 1989.
One would have thought that, after this new evidence, the fate of
Miss Mtemvu's reign would have been cast and hence subsequently
dethrothed. But it wasn't the case.
To begin with, the director of Lino International Agency, organisers
of the beauty pageant in Tanzania, Mr Hashim Lundenga, persistently
challenged people to produce evidence proving that Miss Mtemvu was not
indeed born on May 31, 1991, when in fact it was Lino which had the onus
to investigate the whole matter because its integrity was on the
chopping block.
Up to the end, Lundenga has stood by Miss Mtemvu because, instead of
dethroning her, which was the right and logical decision to take, Lino
has let her "voluntarily surrender the crown," thereby according her a
semblance of respect which she does not deserve at all.
If there is any loser in this whole saga it must be Lundenga and his
firm, Lino. But RITA has really shown the rot in our record keeping
systems. That it could take almost a month to trace the birth records of
a single individual in this computer age beats imagination!
One would have thought that an agency whose responsibility is to keep
the birth and death records of the nation would have an elaborate and
modern database to facilitate information retrieval. The Miss Mtemvu
scandal should spur RITA and other public organisations to start putting
their houses in order.
Now, what happens next following her resignation? This question is
pertinent considering that both perjury and fraud may have been
committed in this particular case. I stand to be corrected, but in order
to secure the new birth certificate Miss Mtemvu most probably submitted
to RITA an affidavit sworn before a commissioner of oaths.
In view of her passport and driving licence evidence, which she has
not contradicted nor refuted, perjury comes into play here. Now, if the
above is correct fraud logically follows.
If she knew that she didn't qualify to take part in the beauty
pageant but still went ahead and concocted a birth certificate
purporting to show that she did, that is fraud - pure and simple.

Tanzania's Kikwete Discharged From U.S. Hospital
Tanzania's President Jakaya Kikwete underwent successful prostate surgery at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States over the weekend, the president's office said.
The operation was performed on Saturday, his office said on Sunday, without giving details on the nature of the surgery.
"The surgery... which lasted for one and a half hours, was highly successful. The president's condition is improving, but he is still in a hospital ward under medical supervision and receiving treatment," the presidency said in a statement.
The president's office said in a previous statement on Nov. 6 Kikwete would spend 10 days in the U.S. for a medical check up.

Kuwaiti woman arrested for driving in Saudi Arabia
A
Kuwaiti woman was arrested in Saudi Arabia for trying to drive her
father to hospital, a Kuwaiti newspaper reported on Sunday, a week after
Saudi women protested against a ban on female drivers.
Kuwaiti
women are free to drive in their country and enjoy far more rights than
those in Saudi Arabia, who are not allowed to travel abroad, open a
bank account or work without permission from a male relative.
The
English language Kuwait Times said the woman was driving in an area
just over the border, with her father in the passenger seat, when she
was stopped by police. Kuwaitis and Saudi locals regularly cross the
border and communities living along the frontier are often a mix of
people from both countries.
The
woman, who said her diabetic father could not drive and needed to be
taken to hospital for treatment, is being held in custody pending an
investigation, the paper said, citing police.
The paper did not suggest that the woman was protesting Saudi Arabia's ban on female drivers.
Saudi
police in the border town al-Khafji referred calls to the local traffic
police, who could not be reached for comment. Officials in the Kuwaiti
Interior Ministry said they could not comment on reports of incidents
outside Kuwait.
Kuwaiti
women gained the right to vote and stand for political office in 2005
after years of campaigning and a push by senior ruling family members.
Conservative
members of the Kuwaiti parliament, including some who draw on Saudi
Arabia's austere interpretation of Islam, had previously blocked the
reforms, saying that Islamic law prevented women from leadership
positions.
In
Saudi Arabia, King Abdullah has pushed some cautious reforms to give
women more employment opportunities and a greater public voice, but has
often faced resistance from senior clergy.

Human Rights Commission investigates "whites only" toilets
The SA Human Rights Commission is looking into allegations that a
Limpopo business park has allocated toilets according to race groups, it
emerged on Wednesday.
"We are aware of this incident and our provincial office is on its
way to [Louis Trichardt] to verify these shocking allegations,"
spokesman Isaac Mangena said in a statement.
"If they are indeed true, we will immediately launch an investigation.”
Mangena told eNCA.com he was unlikely to hear back from his team soon as Louis Trichardt was “really far away”.
The Sowetan on Wednesday reported that business tenants at the
Vleissentraal office block in Louis Trichardt alleged that they were
told to use separate toilets.
The tenants told the newspaper they had had enough of the segregation and humiliation.
"There are four toilets in this building. One is for black females,
one for black males, one for white and coloured females, and the last
one is used by one white male," a businessman, who did not want to be
named, was quoted as saying.
"The toilets are always locked and before we can use them we have to ask for the keys from the white lady managing the building."
Other tenants, who did not want to be named, also spoke to the newspaper about the alleged racism.
Attempts by the Sowetan to get comment from the building owner were unsuccessful.

The search for Meyiwa's killers goes on
The police are confident that the man they have arrested for the
killing of soccer star Senzo Meyiwa is implicated in his killing.
Zanokuhle Mbatha, a resident of Vosloorus who is still in police custody, appeared in court on Friday.
However, his family told DRUM this morning that Mbatha was innocent, saying the police had got the wrong man.
Lieutenant-General Vinesh Naidoo, the police divisional commissioner
for detective services, said the investigators were sure that Mbatha was
linked to the crime.
He said the two men picked up at Beit Bridge and those who were arrested in KwaNongoma were released after questioning.
In total 13 people were taken in for questioning.
The police still maintain that the killing was a robbery horribly gone wrong, and have ruled out any other motive so far.
“The three people taken in for questioning over the weekend could not
be positively linked to the case and were subsequently released.
“There is a great deal of speculation out there in the public domain.
We are certainly not going to respond to each and every rumour. Suffice
to say we appreciate the support we have received from the members of
the public and the media,” he said.
Moonoo said the R250 000 reward for information that could lead to the arrest of the rest of the suspects is still up for grab.
The private firm hired by the Meyiwa family to probe his murder is continuing with its investigation.
Vincent Mdunge, the spokesperson for the private sleuths, said half
of the team of 10 was in Gauteng and the other half was working from
KwaZulu-Natal.
He also ruled out another motive for Meyiwa’s killing, saying their investigation had yielded none.
Mdunge revealed that they had interviewed and cleared the man who
appears with Meyiwa’s companion Kelly Khumalo in a picture circulating
on social media. The man was cleared after the investigators established
that he had merely posed for picture with Khumalo at a restaurant, and
had not links with her.
Senzo wanted to marry me
Johannesburg - Singer and actress Kelly Khumalo said slain Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa planned to divorce his wife Mandisa Mkhize and marry her, the Sunday Times reported.
"I have never been loved by anyone the way Senzo loved me," Khumalo told the newspaper. "He was willing to do anything for me...His heart was with me."
Meyiwa was shot dead on 26 October in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, while visiting Khumalo.
Two men allegedly entered the house, demanding cellphones, and shot him before fleeing.

If it wasn't for Kelly my son would still be alive today
Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa’s father Sam Meyiwa says they will
only allow singer, Kelly Khumalo’s daughter to attend his son’s
funeral.
“We had already accepted the child. Kelly’s mother and another woman
came to show us the baby and I even burned incense (impepho) for her
because Senzo was complaining that the baby is always sick.”
A teary Meyiwa senior says he’s not ready to forgive Kelly for what
happened in the past, ‘splitting his son with their beloved
daughter-in-law, Mandisa’.
When DRUM asked what would happen if Kelly decided to attend the
funeral, Meyiwa senior said: “I will have people to kick her out. I
don’t want her in my house, she knows that very well.”
He went as far as blaming Kelly for his son’s death. “If it wasn’t
for Kelly my son would still be alive today,” he said before bursting in
tears.
Meyiwa senior said Senzo and Mandisa were supposed to be in
Sunninghill, north of Joburg, attending Rooi Mahamutsa’s birthday party.
“Mandisa spoke to Senzo who said he was on his way to Rooi ‘s place
before he was shot. But he changed his mind and went to Kelly’s house.”
What frustrated the Meyiwa family even more is that Kelly did not call or inform them about the shooting.
Tumelo Madlala, who grew up together in Umlazi with Senzo and was at
the house at the time, called the family to inform them of the tragedy.
Kelly Kumaro returns Senzo Meyiwa's cars
Controversial singer Kelly Khumalo has returned Senzo Meyiwa’s cars.
DRUM understands that Kelly, who witnessed the murder of her boyfriend, has returned the Golf GTi and the BMW X6.
Since the murder of the Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain on Sunday night, Kelly had held on tight to the two vehicles.
“The Meyiwa family collected the cars and some of his belongings last
night,” says our source who stays at the same townhouse in Mulbarton,
south of Johannesburg.
Mandisa: Senzo chose Kelly
Slain Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa’s wife has
said her husband was leaving her for singer and actress Kelly Khumalo,
City Press reported on Sunday.
Days before Meyiwa was killed Mandisa Mkhize told the paper she had accepted she had lost him forever.
“I respect Senzo’s decision to be with Kelly Khumalo,”
Mkhize reportedly said in a sms when asked if she felt betrayed after
Meyiwa told her he and Khumalo had broken up.
“We did not end things on a sour note. He is the father of my daughter and despite all he is not a bad person.
“I wish him well; I am at peace with everything,” she said.
In April, Meyiwa and Mkhize featured on the cover of
Drum magazine, and spoke of their love for each other. The two said
during a interview that they were working on their marriage and that
Meyiwa had ended his relationship with Khumalo.
When Mkhize discovered her husband was back with Khumalo she moved out of their apartment in Buccleuch, Johannesburg.
Meyiwa was shot dead last Sunday, October 26, in
Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, while visiting Khumalo. Two men allegedly entered
the house, demanded cellphones, and shot him before fleeing.
Khumalo told the Sunday Times Meyiwa planned to divorce Mkhize and marry her.
“I have never been loved by anyone the way Senzo loved
me. He was willing to do anything for me… His heart was with me,” she
told the newspaper.
Rest in peace Senzo
Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa’s coffin was lowered into a grave at the Heroes Acre cemetery in Chesterville, KwaZulu-Natal, on Saturday afternoon.
As the coffin descended, a police bugler performed a rendition of The Last Post.
Meyiwa’s wife wept, and appeared to be speaking to the slain Orlando Pirates goalkeeper as she threw a flower into the grave.
Meyiwa’s father Samuel looked lost and forlorn, and seemed to be
confused after being handed the South African flag that was draped over
Meyiwa’s coffin.
A heavy rain then began to fall.
As relatives approached the grave, they too began to weep.
Kaizer Chiefs players, led by goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, placed flowers in the grave.
Mining magnate Patrice Motsepe, SA Football Association president
Danny Jordaan and Deputy Agriculture Minister Bheki Cele also paid their
respects.
Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula stood at the grave with a bowed head.
Meyiwa’s grave was next to anti-apartheid journalist Nat Nakasa, who
was buried at the cemetery in September, 49 years after he was buried in
New York.
Meyiwa’s former team-mate Andile Jali greeted Orlando Pirates
chairman Irvin Khoza and Jordaan before going to speak to Meyiwa’s
parents.
A funeral service, attended by thousands of fans was held earlier at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
Meyiwa was shot and killed on Sunday evening in Vosloorus,
Ekurhuleni, while visiting his girlfriend, actress and singer Kelly
Khumalo. Two men entered the house, demanding cellphones, and shot him
before fleeing.

You can run but you can't hide': Mbalula to Meyiwa killers
Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa's killers will be caught and
brought to book, Sport Minister Fikile Mbalula warned at a memorial
service in Johannesburg on Thursday.
"You can run but you can't hide," Mbalula said at the Standard Bank
Arena to pay homage to three sporting figures who died in the past week.
"If they are your friends, if they are your boyfriends, release them," he said to the cheers of sports fans.
"This nation will ever be at ease until we've found them and the
machinery of justice is grinding. Each one of us has the responsibility
because somewhere, somehow, someone knows who killed Senzo Meyiwa."
He was shot dead in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, while visiting his singer
girlfriend Kelly Khumalo on Sunday evening. Two men entered the house
demanding cellphones. They shot him before fleeing.
Kelly allowed to attend Senzo's funeral
Kelly Khumalo is welcome after all at the funeral of her boyfriend Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain Senzo Meyiwa.
“Parents say many things when they are upset,” said
Meyiwa family spokesman Siyabonga Meyiwa after the football star’s
father Sam initially banned her.
According to Siyabonga Meyiwa the family would also
like the goalie’s children to be present, including his child with the
singer and actress.
Khumalo and Meyiwa were in a relationship when he was
killed in a shooting at her family’s home in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, on
Sunday night.
The footballer was married to Mandisa Mkhize.

Khumalo not welcome at Meyiwa's funeral: Report
Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa's family have barred his girlfriend and mother of his child, Kelly Khumalo, from attending his funeral in Durban.
"The service is open to anyone who wants to come to pay their last respects to Senzo, but that girl [Kelly Khumalo] is not welcome. She mustn't even think about coming," Meyiwa's father, Samuel was quoted as saying."
Gauteng detective unit head Maj-Gen Norman Taioe told
reporters in Johannesburg that Meyiwa was shot in his upper body while
visiting his girlfriend, singer and actress Kelly Khumalo, in Vosloorus,
Ekurhuleni, on Sunday night.
Two men entered the house as the
27-year-old national team and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper and captain and
his friends were leaving. One of the attackers was waiting outside.
"Senzo
and his friends were leaving when the two entered the house. One of the
attackers bumped into the first friend and a scuffle ensued," Taioe
said on Monday.
One shot was fired inside the house, and two more were fired randomly outside. The three fled the scene with a stolen cellphone.
A reward of up R250,000 was being offered for information that could lead to the arrest and conviction of the killers.
Police have released identikits of two dreadlocked men with gold teeth believed to be involved in Meyiwa's shooting.
Meyiwa would be buried in Durban on Saturday."
Meyiwa's burial date announced
Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa will be buried in Umlazi, Durban, on Saturday, his club Orlando Pirates said on Tuesday.

Zambia confirms the death of President Michael Sata
The Zambian government has confirmed that President Michael Sata has died after an illness.
Roland Msiska, secretary to the Zambian Cabinet, said in a
statement Wednesday that Sata died late Tuesday in London, where he was
being treated for an undisclosed illness.
Msiska says Sata's wife, Christine Kaseba, and other family members were with the 77-year-old president when he died.
Private Muzi television station and the Zambia Reports and Zambian
Watchdog websites said the southern African nation's cabinet was about
to meet.
Michael Chilufya Sata was born in 1937 in Mpika, in the Northern Province of Zambia.
He came to power in September 2011 and became Zambia’s fifth President after the country gained independence in 1964.
Before independence he was a police officer, railway man and trade unionist.
Under the leadership of Zambia’s first Republican President
Kenneth Kaunda, Sata became the governor of the capital city, Lusaka.
During the campaign for the return to multi-party elections in
1991, he left the ruling Party UNIP to join the Movement for Multi-Party
Democracy MMD under the leadership of Frederick Chiluba.
When the MMD won the 1991 elections, he served in the ministries of local government, labour and health.
He was later appointed minister without portfolio.
In 2001, Sata left the MMD when the then President Chiluba opted
to appoint Levy Mwanawasa as the Party’s flag-bearer as opposed to
himself.
He then formed the Patriotic Front, which contested and lost elections in 2001, 2006 and in 2008.
Sata then ran for the Presidency for a fourth time in September 2011 and won forty three percent of the vote.

Police have released an identikit of two of the three suspects involved in slain Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa.
Meyiwa was shot dead at his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo's house in Vosloorus Erkhuruleni on Sunday, October 27.
On Monday, national police commissioner Riah Phiyega announced that
police had launched a high level investigation into Meyiwa's death.
The reward for information which would lead to the arrest and
conviction of those involved has been increased from R150,000 to
R250,000.
South Africa's Bafana Bafana Captain Shot Dead
South Africa officials have confirmed the killing of Bafana Bafana
and Orlando Pirates captain Senzo Meyiwa by unknown armed attackers.
Meyiwa was said to have be gunned down by intruders when trying to
protect his girlfriend during a robbery at her home near Johannesburg on
Sunday night.
As reported on SuperSports, the 27-year-old goalkeeper died after
suffering a single shot through the chest at the home of his girlfriend
identified as Kelly Khumalo.
"Two guys entered the house and demanded cell phones, money and other
valuables," provincial Community Safety official, Sizakele
Nkosi-Malubane, told reporters at the scene.
"Senzo tried to protect Kelly because one of the men had a gun pointed towards her."
Police said two men entered Khumalo's house about 8p.m. local time
(1800 GMT). A third waited outside the house and all three fled
immediately after the shooting.
Meyiwa was declared dead on arrival at hospital, the police added.
"We can assure all South Africans that we will do all we can to bring
Meyiwa's killers (to) book," the South African Police Service said on
its Twitter account, offering a reward of R150 000.
Meyiwa captained South Africa in their last four matches in the
African Nations Cup qualifiers without conceding a goal and playedon
Saturday when his club advanced to the semi-finals of the South African
League Cup.
"This is a sad loss whichever way you look at it -- to Senzo's
family, his extended family, Orlando Pirates and to the nation," Pirates
chairman Irvin Khoza said in a statement.
The death of Meyiwa makes it the second high profile death in
sporting circles in South Africa in a matter of days as only recently
800m runner Mbulaeni Mulaudzi also died in a car crash.
South Africa: Meyiwa Jersey to be Retired
Johannesburg — In commemoration of Bafana Bafana captain Senzo
Meyiwa, Orlando Pirates chairman Irvin Khoza has announced the

his girlfriend in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, on Sunday evening.
He is the second player to be honoured in this way, with former
striker Lesley Manyathela's number 22 Pirates shirt retired after he
died in a car accident in 2003.

Zimbabwe student challenge Grace Mugabe's Phd
A Zimbabwe student union Zinasu was due to take Grace Mugabe to court on Wednesday.
This involves a PhD which the first lady was awarded by the University of Zimbabwe.
Critics are asking why Grace Mugabe's thesis does not appear online.
The country's vice president Joice Mujuru graduated with a PhD at the same time.
Her thesis already appears on the University of Zimbabwe website.
To explain this the state-owned Herald quoted an unnamed senior academic at UZ.
It's claimed that publishing a PhD dissertation can take to up to a year and that of the 12 PhD students only the vice president’s thesis had been uploaded.
Student union Zinasu denies it’s targeting the first lady.
But that it's protecting the credibility of the country’s education system.

Woman Hides On Roof As Intruder Looks For Her
A quiet morning in bed escalated into a terrifying ordeal for one
young woman when a burglar broke into her house, forcing her to hide on
her roof.
Melora Rivera’s entire horrific escapade was captured on camera by
bystander Alexandria Thompson, who was snapping photos on a cellphone
while Rivera huddled under the eaves of a bank of windows, barely
blocked from the view of the home intruder just feet away from her.
Rivera, who was laying in bed when the break in began, grabbed her phone
while on the run to the roof. She called 911 and spoke to the
dispatcher while crouched below the eaves.
“He managed to break one of these panels and reach in to unlock the door,” Rivera told CBS LA.
“Once I saw him in the house, I knew that we both couldn’t be there. I
knew that I didn’t want to have a confrontation with him of any sort,
you know, not knowing what his intention was.”
The would-be burglar was identified as Christian Hicks, 29, a
well-known homeless person from the area. As it happens, a neighbor of
Rivera’s had called police at 7:30 that same morning to report Hicks
meandering through a yard.
“I saw this guy this morning in handcuffs,” Thompson reported to CBS LA. “I’ve seen him in my yard. I called the police.”
Winnie Mandela wants Qunu: Lawyers file claim
Winnie Madikizela-Mandela's lawyers have filed papers at the high court

Punishment
These two Ugandan kids were punished (told to stand outside, in sacks)
simply for speaking their mother tongue in class. “Vernacular” is
forbidden, apparently. What’s wrong with being bi-lingual? What do they
gain from ostracising our own languages and making kids feel ashamed of
their culture?
Air France cancels flights as strike continues
PARIS - A pilots strike at Air France entered its second day on
Tuesday, with the two sides apparently no closer to resolving a dispute
over cost cuts that has forced the French carrier to cancel 60 percent
of flights.
The airline said it expected to operate "at least 40 percent of its
flights" on Wednesday, based on three fifths of pilots walking out, as
management prepared to hold further talks with unions later on Tuesday.
The pilots are carrying out a week-long strike over Air France's
plans to expand the low-cost operations of its Transavia brand by
setting up foreign bases to fight back against fierce competition from
European low-cost airlines.
"We're continuing to negotiate, we have made proposals, we have heard
the concerns of pilots who imagined that Transavia France could
suddenly replace all of Air France across France," airline chief
Frederic Gagey told Europe 1 radio.
The expansion of Transavia is part of a new strategic plan unveiled
last week aimed at boosting earnings that sees Transavia having a fleet
of 100 jets by 2017, up from about 50 now, and more than doubling
passengers to 20 million, with a goal of lifting it out of the red in
2018.
Gagey sought to reassure pilots, saying the Transavia fleet would be
limited to 30 aircraft in France and that the idea was not to replace
Air France but to complete the company's armoury "to attack a new
market, the leisure market".
But he ruled out giving Transavia pilots the same contracts as Air France colleagues.
Pay and conditions for pilots switching to Transavia are seen as the
biggest roadblock in the dispute, which Air France has said is costing
it about $12.95 to $19.43 million a day.
Shares in parent group Air France-KLM were down 3.9 percent on Tuesday for a two-day drop of 7 percent.
Gagey said he still hoped to reach operating break even over the full
year, although "the chances are diminishing as the strikes go on".

Luxury car owners warned of new crime trend
JOHANNESBURG – Drivers of luxury cars are at risk of having their vehicles targeted by organized crime syndicates.
A new trend in luxury car thefts – involving the targeting of victims
through dealerships or social media – has been picked up by the South
African Insurance Crime Bureau.
It involves fraudsters pretending to be employees of dealerships – in
particular representatives from the service department or customer
service.
People tend to expect a speedy reaction from companies when they complain in a public forum or on social media.
Victims are either identified by their information on record at the
dealership, or through comments or complaints they post on social media
or other websites. Some of the victims have also been people who have
filed complaints directly with dealerships.
The customer is contacted by a syndicate member purporting to be
someone from the dealership. They explain that they don’t want any
negative publicity and will do whatever necessary not to inconvenience
them and offer to fetch the car from the client’s home and take it in
for repairs.
The syndicate member then makes an arrangement to pick up the car.
Only when the client contacts the dealership to find out what is
happening with the car is it discovered that there was misrepresentation
involved.
By that time the car is gone.
Six people were arrested in Botswana after they were found in possession of four of the stolen cars which they were taking to Zambia. One of them was also arrested in Zambia with a stolen car.
While the majority of the cases have been reported in Gauteng, there
have also been similar incidents in Nelspruit, Rustenburg, Klerksdorp
and Durban. “The suspects arrested are allegedly the individuals who collected the vehicles from the victims,” Van Zyl said. car owners could protect themselves
from being targeted by the scammers, Van Zyl said motorists should be
aware that social media is being used by criminals, who are watching for
posts they can use and target the writer.

Philippines bombing plot failed
Three men arrested over a foiled attempt to bomb the Philippine
capital's airport were also planning to attack the Chinese embassy and
one of Manila's biggest malls, authorities said Tuesday.
The men, who were detained on Monday at the airport with an van
containing petrol bombs and firecrackers, had planned a series of
consecutive attacks, apparently to publicise their anti-China
grievances, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima told reporters.
"They claim to be defenders of the Filipino people and consider China
and (Filipino-Chinese) oligarch taipans' monopolistic business
practices and illegal mining as enemies," she said.
De Lima said the men appeared to be particularly angry at the
Philippine government's perceived "soft" stance towards China in a
long-running dispute over competing territorial claims in the South
China Sea.
De Lima said the group, which may involve more people than those
detained, had planned a series of attacks on Monday at buildings linked
to China or to the Chinese-Filipino business community.
"They also had plans yesterday to firebomb SM Mall of Asia in Pasay
city and strafing the Chinese embassy and the DMCI building," she said.
SM Mall of Asia is owned by Henry Sy, the Philippines' richest man who was born in China.
DMCI is a construction firm owned by David Consunji, another
ethnic-Chinese Filipino whom Forbes magazine lists as the country's
sixth richest man.
Nevertheless, de Lima said investigators were not convinced that the
group's real intention was to express anger against China and Chinese
interests.
"We want to know how big this group is, what is their capacity really
to create all this havoc, and what is their real agenda," de Lima said.
"Are they on their own or are there (people) behind them? We will investigate all these."
This is just comic relief to get attention... it is not a terrorist attack.
The men -- aged 43, 22 and 25 -- worked as security guards for a
textile company just outside Manila, according to investigators.
But De Lima said the leader of the group claimed to belong to a
secretive fraternity of police and military figures that had been linked
to coup attempts in the 1980s which failed to topple then-president
Corazon Aquino.
The current president is Benigno Aquino, Corazon's son, who has been
an extremely popular president during his four years in office but has
endured a few months of brutal political battles over a series of
controversies.
A senator-ally of Aquino alleged in July that retired military
officials were trying to recruit troops to destabilise the government.
The military reaffirmed its loyalty to Aquino following the senator's comments.
Despite the intense publicity and top-level concern that Monday's
arrests generated, it appeared the suspects' plans were unsophisticated
and they were not well armed, according to authorities.
The four bombs found in the van at the airport were plastic bottles
containing petrol that the attackers intended to plant at a toilet
block, Rommel Vallejo, one of the lead investigators, told reporters.
The bombs' fuses were from firecrackers that would have given the
suspects just eight seconds to flee after being lit, Vallejo said.
A small handgun was also seized from the men, but no other weapons or
ammunition had been found that would have enabled them to carry out any
other attacks, according to Vallejo.
De Lima said the three would be charged with illegal possession of explosives and conspiracy to commit terrorism.
However military chief General Gregorio Catapang ridiculed the suspects and their apparent plot.
"This is just comic relief to get attention... it is not a terrorist
attack," Catapang told reporters in a separate briefing, adding the
airport bombs were "just firecrackers".
Calls to a spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Manila were unanswered.
Nurse raped at Helen Joseph hospital
A nurse was assaulted at Johannesburg's Helen Joseph Hospital, the Gauteng health department said on Tuesday.
"The Gauteng health department has beefed up security measures at the
Helen Joseph Hospital following the brutal attack on a phlebotomist
nurse," spokesman Prince Hamnca said.
DA Gauteng health spokesman Jack Bloom claimed she was raped.
"I am horrified by the reported rape of a health worker at the Helen
Joseph Hospital last week on Friday evening," he said in a statement.
Hamnca could not be immediately reached to confirm this.
Bloom said: "The Gauteng health department has now confirmed this
incident, but only after the wide circulation of an anonymous sms that
claimed that the victim had died and management was covering it up."
Hamnca said the attacker was someone who got into the hospital. "The person has not been apprehended," he said.
The attack took place at the Wits University-controlled area in the hospital on Friday night.
The nurse works for the National Health Laboratory Service and draws
blood from patients. "The nurse... is recovering well and is expected to
be discharged soon," said Hamnca.
Security guards had been assigned to escort health workers around the
hospital. "The university has also changed locks and put measures in
place to ensure that their area is secured," said Hamnca.
The person has not been apprehended
The hospital had set up a committee to review the effects of the new
security measures. It would take into account the concerns raised by
staff and patients.
"A case has been reported to the South African Police Service and we
want the perpetrator to be apprehended and face the full might of the
law," Hamnca said.
Bloom said the department spent around R150 million a year on private security and should be held accountable for the assault.
"If they are not performing they must be fired. Staff and patients
need to know that safety is always a high priority," Bloom said.
The Star newspaper quoted an unnamed doctor as saying: "I just found
out that a staff member... had been raped, gagged, stabbed, beaten on
the fourth floor of the hospital. Management has been all quiet about
this and did not say much to people working night shifts."
A female staff member told the publication: "I am seriously
considering hiring personal security but that would have to come out of
my own pocket. It's a joke that I even have to think like this."
Another doctor said: "Unlike Charlotte Maxeke, which has guards on
every floor of every block, Helen Joseph only has a few on duty and it's
grossly inadequate."
Police spokeswoman Constable Mikateko Bila could not confirm the crime.
